Lentor Mansion Preview Starts on 1st March

Today I am going to be unboxing the Cloud Gateway Ultra Singapore. I found that it was available on the Ubiquiti Store Singapore so I grabbed the Cloud Gateway Ultra. Free delivery and just 1-2 days after my order was placed, I received it.

What is the Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra Singapore

Cloud Gateway Ultra Singapore fits into the latest range of Ubiquiti products.

The Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG-Ultra) is a compact, powerful multi-WAN UniFi Cloud Gateway designed for advanced routing and security features. It’s capable of managing over 30 UniFi network devices and more than 300 client devices. The device offers 1 Gbps routing with Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS) and supports multi-WAN load balancing. Additionally, it features a 0.96″ LCM status display and is USB-C powered (adapter included).

I am especially interested in the IDS/IPS function and I want to see if my Internet speed will suffer (a lot) with this function set up.

The UCG-Ultra includes a 2.5Gb Ethernet WAN port and four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports. It does not have built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, so it needs to be paired with UniFi access points for wireless connectivity. The unit is powered by a 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 Quad-Core processor and comes with 3GB of DDR4 memory and 16GB of eMMC storage. The operating system supports a range of security and networking features, including application-aware firewall rules, signature-based threat detection, and full stateful firewall. It also offers advanced networking capabilities like SD-WAN, VPN support, and customizable DHCP server settings.

For detailed management of network devices and clients, the UCG-Ultra integrates with the UniFi Network management suite, accessible through a mobile app available for iOS and Android devices.

I am already using a few Ubiquiti products such as Ubiquiti Flex Mini 5 Port Switch, Ubiquiti UAP-AC-M Access Point and the UniFi FlexHD Access Point. Of course, if I use this Cloud Gateway Ultra Singapore, I will be replacing the wonderful EdgeRouter X. Fantastic product.

It comes with a two pin USB-C powered adapter included but I was also given a three pin USB-C adapter separately. It also comes with a short network cable for connecting between your internet power and the gateway.

How does the Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra fit for me ?

I have been running the UniFi Controller in Docker on my NAS (specifically the Synology DS1520+). But I don’t like the fact that the NAS is running 24 by 7 non stop (the disk does not even sleep) which I think is because the Unifi Controller is always running.

The Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway can run the Unifi Controller so I can hence remove the Unifi Controller on my NAS.

In terms of set up, you can see I will replace the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X with this Cloud Gateway Ultra. But I doubt I can wall mount the Gateway like how I used double sided tape to wall mount the EdgeRouter X.. Nice 🙂

The performance of my network is excellent so I am wondering how much “loss” I am going to get from moving from Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X to this Cloud Gateway Ultra with IPS/IDS running…

We shall see how the new Gateway Ultra perform… and remember if you are running the EdgeRouter X, you need to do the hardware offloading steps.
