It has been a season or two since Starhub won the right to broadcast EPL. I enjoyed watching it in multiple devices (Smart TV, apple iPhone, Apple iPad etc). However, there is an issue with Watching Starhub EPL overseas (and somehow my travels are during EPL weekends). Starhub has locked it down (I don’t blame them) that you cannot watch the Starhub EPL overseas. VPN does not always work (especially cheap ones).
So I am resolving this issue of Watching Starhub EPL overseas with the aid of a FREE software called Tailscale.
Using Tailscale in my home network
Tailscale has become an indispensable part of my network set up. I used it to access my home network (especially my Synology) and its various apps (e.g. Jellyfin, Synology Hyper Backup, Paperless-NGX, FreshRSS etc) when I am not at home.
Now in preparation for using watching Starhub EPL overseas, I am also using Tailscale as a Exit Node.
There are many tutorials to set this up in the internet so I should not be the expert. Just sharing two videos that are useful to me. You do need it to set up an account in Tailscale (best using your PC or MacBook) first and it is FREE. No VPN subscription nonsense.
Setting up Tailscale as a Exit Node on Apple TV
You can use Apple TV sitting in the home to act as an Exit Node if you install Tailscale on Apple TV. And you can as “Tailscale” is available as an app on TvOS. After installing the app on Apple TV, you will go to the network setting up and then set up the Apple TV as an exit node. Watch this video ๐
And after setting up on Apple TV, you need to go into the Tailscale configuration screen (your console account on Tailscale.com) to confirm the set up.
You need to choose the “Use as Exit Node” to confirm the set up.
Then your Apple TV is now an Exit Node.
You can also set up Apple TV as a subnet router but that’s another whole story.
Setting up Tailscale as a Exit Node on Synology
Setting up Tailscale as an Exit Node on Synology is a little more complicated than on an Apple TV. But if you are already running a Synology as a 24 by 7 machine, then it make sense to be a Exit Node too.
Watch this video.
So I had to use Terminal on my MacBook to SSH into my Synology DS1520+.
Then run this command.
The result is
So time to go back to Tailscale.com and enter your console to approve the exit node. I love this confirmation as it gives me security.
So with that, I have TWO Exit Nodes in my Home Network.
One is the Apple TV.
One is the Synology DS1520+.
Brilliant. Typical Singaporean ๐
Choosing Exit Node to use on an iPhone and iPad and MacBook
On an Apple iPhone Tailscale App, I can see both Exit Nodes and can choose either one for use anytime.
On my MacBook Air, I can also choose my Exit Node.
And finally on my iPad too. Here’s a picture of my iPad Tailscale App and showing that I have chosen my Apple TV as my Exit Node (to watch Starhub EPL).
Using Tailscale to Watching Starhub EPL overseas
So the big question is does it work.
Yes it does. On my recent trip to Maldives, I use the hotel network to access the exit node of my Tailscale and was able to be watching Starhub EPL overseas.
The “What Is My IP Address” before I access my Tailscale Exit Node.
Then I choose my Apple TV as my exit node on my iPad.
Then I check “What is My IP Address” next.
Oh. so I am back to my HOME network in Singapore. And accessing the internet through my home network.
In other words,
Hotel in Maldives -> Home Network -> Apple TV Exit Node -> Internet Access
So it is as if I am at home, accessing the WWW through my home network and watching Starhub EPL overseas ๐
Here..
And Liverpool won the match against Crystal Palace while my Newcastle only managed a draw with Everton. Damn.
All from my beautiful villa in Maldives.. and capturing Starlapse on my Insta360.
Also if you are using Tailscale on Synology, you might want to update Tailscale on Synology automatically.
