I finally bought this after much wait. For Shoppe 7-7 discounts and wallet has (a little) money (till the bills arrive). I am talking about the Ubiquiti UniFi UXG Fiber 10G Gateway 🙂

Having said that, you must be aware that I actually made a mistake. I wanted the UniFi USG Cloud Gateway Fibre to replace my Cloud Gateway Ultra. But in a moment of mistake, I accidentally bought the UniFi UXG Fiber 10G Gateway.

The difference between UniFi UXG Fiber 10G Gateway and UniFi USG Cloud Gateway Fibre

The main difference is that the UniFi UXG Fiber 10G Gateway has no built in Cloud Key while the UniFi USG Cloud Gateway Fibre (just like the Cloud Gateway Ultra) has. That means if you buy the UniFi UXG Fiber 10G Gateway, you need to somehow somewhere to host the Unifi Controller. 

You can either buy a Cloud Key (no….. looks large and feel it is expensive), or self host in a Raspberry Pi or an old Windows laptop running 24 by 7 (using software already provided by Ubiquiti) or as I did previously, self host the community made Unifi Controller docker in a Synology NAS or even pay for a cloud server to host the docker (e.g. those quite reasonable priced VPS hosting services which you can run other Docker stuff too).

Or you can try out a 3rd party Unifi Controller hosting services such as Hostifi and Unihosted. Unihosted has a FREE plan if you have less than 3 Unifi devices. Pretty neat.

In the end, I went with Hostifi to try it out. It costs $9 USD a month. They helped me to migrate from my home’s controller from Cloud Gateway Fibre to their hosting server (in Singapore !) and then walk me through the migration from Cloud Gateway Ultra to the 10G Fibre. It was very seamless and I was up in less than an hour (without the need to reset all my Unifi devices !!).

Remember this is not necessary. You can always host your own Unifi Controller.

And oh there is no nice nice LED panel in front and there is a power brick too 🙁

Where I buy the Ubiquiti UniFi UXG-Fiber 10G Desktop Gateway

As usual, I bought it from Shopee but this time during the 7-7 event (I always bluff myself that it is a great time to buy during such event.. Chinese call it Ah Q Spirit). The product was normally selling at around SGD350 after some vouchers 🙂

In preparation for this purchase, I actually bought things like acrylic stand wide enough for the much longer UXG-Fiber than the Cloud Gateway Ultra, UK BS1363 Plug to IEC 320 C5 Short AC Power Cord (in white !) and a SFP+ Transceiver (not even sure if I will use it).

Basically I am a shopee-hore…. sigh….

Surprisingly, it came with the 3 pin plug used in Singapore.. it is still a little too long for my liking and so I might replace it with a shorter UK BS1363 Plug to IEC 320 C5 Short AC Power Cord.

There is a template given for helping to properly place the “soft anti slip stoppers”. Ya.. a template to paste four stoppers..

The back of the UXG-Fiber 10G Gateway… there are 4x 2.5GB RJ45 ports (with one POE+), one 10GB WAN port (for your Internet connection… see the BLUE globe) and then 2 SFP+ ports… all the ports can be reconfigured to be WAN or LAN….

And it works well with the rest of my Unifi equipment at home such as UniFi U7 Pro Wall WiFi 7 Access Point and Unifi USW-Flex-2.5G Flex Mini 5-Port Switch and even my old FlexHD.

Will planning to get a 8 Port Unifi 2.5GB switch one day (when wallet is not so empty..)

Placing the Unifi Fibre Gateway

Here’s how I place (currently) my Unifi Fibre 10G Gateway. Unfortunately, the power brick and the length of the (slightly inflexible) power cord made it necessary for me to place it below the acrylic rack… and then my ViewQWest Modem on the right side 🙂

Powering the Unifi USW-Flex-2.5G Flex Mini 5-Port Switch by POE+

Now if you read the specs of the UXG Fiber Gateway, you know there is ONE (1) POE+ output. You can use that to power other Unifi devices such as APs and switches.

As a start, I use it to power the USW-Flex-2.5G Flex Mini 5-Port Switch which I had bought earlier.

On the UXG Fiber Gateway end, that’s Port 4 of the Gateway.

Before using it, the power draw is 0…

I then move the RJ45 cable to connect Port 4 to the LAN point to the study room’s LAN point to reach the USW-Flex-2.5G Flex Mini 5-Port Switch. I then make sure the RJ45 at the LAN Point in the study room is plugged into the switch’s POE IN port.

Very quickly you will see the switch powered up and the lights blinking. And of course, all the equipment attached to the rest of the ports are receiving internet or network connections.

On the UXG end, you can see the power drawdown for using the POE to power the small little adorable switch. Just 3.5W out of the 30W available. Unfortunately there is only 1 POE+ Out Port on the UXG Fibre Gateway.

I am considering using the UXG Fibre Gateway to drive the Ubiquiti 8-Port Flex 2.5G PoE switch which is arriving soon 🙂

So what do you think ? Would you get a UXG Fibre Gateway or would you rather get a USG Cloud Gateway Fibre !

Just make sure you get the right one. Don’t make the same mistake as I did 🙂

      And also not readily available in Singapore and expensive if even u want to grab one locally.
