When you think about luxury train travel in Japan, the Saphir Odoriko might come to mind, especially with its sophisticated design and unique sensory experience. Launched by JR-East in March 2020, it promises an escape along the picturesque Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka.
Izu, itself, offers a wealth of authentic attractions, ranging from natural wonders to cultural and historical sites. Conveniently accessible from Tokyo, it stands as one of Japan’s top destinations for enjoyable getaways with family and friends. We visited two special places in Izu and will share more of those places in the next blog posts. It is a very pretty place !
The Saphir Odoriko is not a bullet train but a luxurious limited express train operated by JR East. Its striking deep blue exterior evokes the sapphire hues of the sea and sky along the Izu Peninsula, embodying a perfect blend of elegance and regional charm.
Passengers can indulge in three premium seating options: Green Cars, Green Car Private Compartments, and Premium Green Cars. Onboard, a range of amenities ensures a comfortable journey, including a well-equipped cafeteria to enhance the travel experience.
You can see the unique sticker for the train service on the floor on the train station (in this case, Shinagawa). Car 5 of Saphir Odoriko is, the Green Car.
Origins of Saphir Odoriko
The Saphir Odoriko, launched in March 2020, marks a new era in luxury train travel in Japan, replacing the older Superview Odoriko service. The name “Saphir” is inspired by the striking blue sapphire color that reflects the stunning ocean scenery of the Izu Peninsula. You’ll find that the train retains the “Odoriko” name, a nod to Yasunari Kawabata’s novel, which adds a cultural layer to your journey.
Designed by the acclaimed Ken Okuyama, the train’s aesthetic draws inspiration from the natural beauty of Izu. The name ‘Saphir,’ derived from the French word for sapphire, symbolizes the radiant blue of the peninsula’s ocean and sky.
This train has undergone multiple remodels, with the latest version being the 2021 E257 series, designed to enhance your travel experience. It’s operated by JR-East, ensuring a commitment to quality and comfort. The Saphir Odoriko not only carries forward the legacy of its predecessor but elevates it by offering a more luxurious ambiance.
As you travel along, you’ll appreciate the thoughtfulness put into each detail, from the seating arrangements to the onboard experience.
Understanding the routes of Saphir Odoriko
It is important to note that to get to Izu, the Saphir Odoriko is not the only way. It is but a “special luxury” train that runs along the same route as the normal train.
It is also a “limited express” train which means it stops at pretty little train stations along the way to Izu.
For us, we had JR pass which we used to take the “normal trains” from Shinagawa to Ito. It is only the “return” trip from Ito back to Tokyo that we took the Saphir Odoriko.
The Different Train Seats
With its launch, the Saphir Odoriko not only transformed luxury train travel but also brought a distinct aesthetic appeal that sets it apart from traditional rail services. You’ll immediately notice the enchanting deep blue exterior, inspired by the sapphire waters of the Izu Peninsula. Designed by Ken Okuyama, the train’s look reflects both elegance and the natural beauty of its surroundings.
Here’s a map of the train and all its car.
Car 1 : Premium Green Car
As you step inside, the interior design continues to impress. The spacious Green Cars feature a 1 + 1 seating layout, creating an intimate atmosphere while maintaining comfort. Premium Green Cars boast large windows and skylights, ensuring you won’t miss any scenic views during your journey. Each private compartment is crafted for privacy and relaxation, resembling a cozy café setting, perfect for small groups.
We are the Premium Green Car and thoroughly enjoyed our ride from Izu to Tokyo. Unfortunately as it was late at night the views are NOT too exciting. But then the night, the feeling of coziness inside the train is a very interesting feeling too.
The seats have individual controls for all kinds of positions..
And the leg room is great…
Cars No. 2 and 3: Green Car Private Compartments
Relax and unwind with close friends or family in the comfort of a Green Car private compartment as you travel to your destination. These exclusive compartments come in two configurations: one accommodating 1-4 passengers and another for 1-6 passengers.
Designed to evoke the ambiance of a quiet, cozy café, these spaces offer a touch of luxury and tranquility throughout your journey. Here are some photos I took of these cars. But it is NOT occupied 🙂
Car 4 : The Dining Car
The Car No. 4 cafeteria serves a selection of light meals and drinks, thoughtfully curated to complement the refined ambiance of your journey. It was a great place to take in the sights and food and drinks. Onboard, the cafeteria showcases a sleek design, emphasizing gourmet dining with a menu curated by renowned chefs.

Car 5 to 8 : Green Car
The “Entry Level” to the The Saphir Odoriko… With comfortable and spacious seating arranged in a twin and single configuration per row, these cars provide a delightful space where natural light streams through skylights and glass luggage shelves, enhancing the travel experience.
The Toilets in The Saphir ODORIKO
As usual, the toilets are clean and large…. what’s new 🙂
The overall aesthetic combines modern sophistication with the timeless beauty of Japan, making your travel experience not just about getting from point A to B, but about indulging in the journey itself. Whether you’re enjoying the views or the luxurious surroundings, the Saphir Odoriko is a feast for the senses.
Conclusion : To Do or Not To Do
Do it but do it during the day time where you can catch the views.
Don’t take the night train. It is not so nice views as it is all dark.
Else it is a great way to travel 🙂
