Lenovo X1 Carbon Windows 8 Laptop

Oh my god.. everytime something new changes, there is a new for a whole change in the ecosystem.

I am probably exaggerating but I had to change some stuff in my home office this week due to the arrival of a new laptop. The Lenovo X1 Carbon running the ever “exciting” windows 8. This replaces my current laptop, the Lenovo Thinkpad X220.

Boy is it slim…

Let me see… the laptop came with a mini-displayport cable to VGI. Yes.. VGI.. in this age/space/time/world, we still use VGI ? So I had to replace the display port cable I am using today with the Dell 2412 monitor..

Then next, there is no network port. Yes.. none.. so they supplied a USB to ethernet cable.

See the 2 cables supplied:

And the VGA Cable and Network cable I found in my storeroom…

Another change. The power adopter has changed. It now is a slim tip (just like Macbook Pros…)… I usually have two (one for home, one for travelling) but this time, I can only have one.. probably need to find a way to use back the old power adopter. I understand that there are some converters available on the internet for these slim tip power adoptor to work with the traditional Lenovo Yellow Large Cute power tip πŸ™‚

And finally there are only 2 (TWO TWO TWO) USB ports and because of that, I need to use a USB hub to solve the lack of USB ports. A new docking station is needed anyway and is beyond the budget.

Don’t get me wrong. This laptop is great for travelling (like those cool businessmen flying Business Class and doing work on the plane with this cool laptop). But because I am using this at home office and most of the time, just want to link it to my monitor and do work on it. Without the touch screen (oh yes, this is a touch screen laptop).

Nevertheless, up and running within a few minutes (after going to the store and finding an old dirty VGA cable.. who uses a VGA cable today !!?? RANT)..

And the left hand side. the use of a USB hub (non powered.. sometimes it does not work when I plug in a hard disk or even a headset.. I need to get a powered hub soon)

[UPDATE JUNE 2013]: I bought this Lenovo 90W AC Adapter for ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop so that when I need to travel or go office, I do not need to bend my back to the back of my work table and get the original adapter from the back. Confirmed that it works πŸ™‚

Sorry if i sound like i was bitching :). I like the laptop. Probably great laptop. Just not so great for my home office πŸ™‚

  1. No, no, I didn’t view it as bitching but sometimes people (not you) tend to criticse these things, say at, Lenovo but accept it with Apple. At least, the connectivity cables came with the laptop. But yes, for a home office all these lacks are not great.

Would be great if you could write up a review between X220 and X1. I have an X200 and love it for its great keyboard. I still think Thinkpads’ keyboards are the gold standard.

    • I love the keyboard ! I always choose Lenovo because of this single reason… πŸ™‚

Ever since I got my first Lenovo >10 years ago, I love the keyboard and I always choose a Lenovo when I have a chance πŸ™‚

(BTW: The laptop X1 Carbon is rocking fast… I am enjoying the speed..) Will share more feelings after I use it for a while
