And just like Monster Building (in Hong Kong Island side), it has attracted many tourists to visit the place.
They hope to see this. Colourful Choi Hung Estate with amazing colourful exterior.
They will get this IN REAL LIFE. Unedited. No photo shop. Nothing.
Granted, the basketball courts are super colourful (and very nice) but the actual Choi Hung Estate buildings are not as colourful. It is rather dull.
Guess the age has caught up with the buildings in 彩虹邨.
About Hong Kong Choi Hung Rainbow Estate
Choi Hung Estate 彩虹邨, one of the oldest public housing estates in Hong Kong, is famous for its iconic, colorful architecture. Built in the early 1960s, it was designed to provide affordable housing and improve living standards. The name “Choi Hung” translates to “Rainbow” in English, aptly describing the estate’s vividly painted exterior in rainbow colors.
The estate has become a popular spot for photographers and tourists, known for its Instagram-worthy views. The combination of the rainbow-colored buildings and the basketball courts creates a unique and photogenic urban landscape. This has led to Choi Hung Estate being featured in various forms of media and becoming a symbol of Hong Kong’s public housing development and urban culture.
Note that in November 2023, it was announced that Hong Kong Choi Hung Rainbow Estate will be redeveloped (i.e. SERS in Singapore… ha) and perhaps this iconic place will be no more next time.
So perhaps that is a good reason to visit it NOW.
How to get to Choi Hung Estate or Rainbow Estate
Choi Hung Estate is right at the Choi Hung MTR station (surprise) on the Kwun Tong Line. Incidentally that’s also two stops from the Wong Tai Sin station which is one of my favourite to do every trip to Hong Kong. That was how I decided that, after a prayer at Wong Tai Sin, to go to see the famous Rainbow Estate.
A prayer at Wong Tai Sin is a must for me, every trip (if possible). Just like a visit to Tze Shan Monastery 慈山寺 (if possible) every trip.
Indeed when you arrive at Choi Hung Estate, you will see the beautiful colourful MTR station 🙂
A check at MTR station tells you to use C4 as the exit. I also suggest that as it is the most direct to the estate.
You are on the right way when you see this 🙂
And oh my god, so coincidentally, my idol’s concert poster is showing on the way to C4 Exit at Choi Hung MTR station. Indeed I was going to the Jacky Cheung concert AFTER the visit to Hong Kong Choi Hung Rainbow Estate 🙂
As you exited C4, you will see this estate map for the Choi Hung Estate.
Take a LEFT turn at this map down this little path.
As you reached the end, you will see this car park.
For reference (you don’t need it but..), right behind you as you looked at this car park, will be the Choi Hung Estate Catholic Secondary School. Talk about a real neighbourhood school.
Walk into the car park…
And clim up the stairs till you reach the top. It is just a few flights of stairs.

And tata.. you have reached Rainbow Estate or Choi Hung Estate 彩虹邨 !
I would be lying if I don’t say “A wave of disappointment swept through me”. I feel apologetic to my partner for going to this place with me.
But take a few photos we must….
This other building isn’t too colourful too…
The basketball courts itself are more colourful 🙂
One last photo.. I think this one I played with some iPhone settings..
And after 5 mins, we left 🙂
Hong Kong Choi Hung Rainbow Estate : To Go or Not To Go
Don’t waste your time. Move on. Unless you must join the Instagram photos of a Hong-Kong-Must-Visit-Story…. else I think it is just a waste of time.
You are better off going for a hike at the Garden Hills in Kowloon.
