Dai pai dong 大牌檔 are getting less and less in Hong Kong and Patnotebook is a big fan of them in Hong Kong. In this latest trip to Hong Kong, I visited one at Temple Street….So introducing what I personally think is one of the best in Hong Kong.
This one is the Hing Kee Restaurant 興記煲仔飯 at Temple Street.

G/F, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19 Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei
Here’s a map of the Hing Kee Restaurant 興記煲仔飯 from Jordon MTR (the closest MTR).
The restaurant, by the way, has as many as 5 stores in the same area !! Amazing. The boss must be super rich !!
Actually this place is at a part of Temple Street that is closer to Yau Ma Tei than the mass of Temple Street vendors that are closer to Jordon MTR. If you visit Temple Street, you tend to start at the Jordon MTR side (with its mass of tourist traps restaurants). But that’s fine as you can always start from Jordon MTR and walk up the temple street and then pass the area where the fortune tellers are, and a little walk up a smaller group of vendors and you reach the Hing Kee Restaurant 興記煲仔飯… not bad a walk too as you can visit Temple Street stores to buy souvenirs and copied products…. Just don’t eat the nonsense food at Temple Street…
The restaurant has a queue….. It is by the side of the road next to the restaurant. You can try to go early in the evening or much later at night to avoid the queue….
The queue with seats for those closer to the head.
The queue do clear up quite fast (relatively speaking) as they have 5 different stores to serve the customers so don’t worry.
As tempting as it is, don’t be a F*** idiot and attempt to skip the queue. You will be spotted and get a good scolding from the staff or the locals. We saw people trying to do that, and was enjoying the scene of them getting roasted and having to meekly go back and queue (after showing off that they don’t need to eat there, ba ba ba)…
And what to order..
Of course, you must eat the 煲仔飯 (I ordered the pure Chicken version and it was yummy):
Or these damn good clams in sauce too:
But there is ONE FREAKING DISH YOU MUST FREAKING JUST TRY !!!
It is 蠔餅….I, Patnotebook, is a HUGE fan of fried oyster in Singapore and here’s the BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST fried oyster I have ever tasted in Hong Kong.
Please don’t bother with a “small size” (2 Pieces) order. Order the “BIG SIZE” (4 Pieces).
It is a great place during cool (or cold) nights to visit and have some soup, some fried oyster and some 煲仔飯 ! Nice way to taste great food at a 大牌檔 in Hong Kong !!
And after dinner, may I suggest a short walk back to Yuen Kee Dessert 源記喳咋 for its excellent 甜品 and 糖水 !
BRILLIANT TRIP !! I LOVE Hong Kong !!!
I was back in summer and the place was really deserted. Apparently people don’t really come and eat at this place during summer time ! 🙂
So it was very easy for me to take more photos ! 🙂
Sharing them !!
Where it is once packed, now it is empty 🙂

Food we ordered that night !!
YUMMY !!!!!
