It was not too long ago when I loaded up a Synology DS1511+ with 5 pieces of 2TB hard disks… that was back in Jan 2011.

Fast forward to July 2012 and I am running out of space with about 500GB left. Partially due to the fact that I am very conservative with my stuff (e.g Rule 6 : Do not delete unless u are sure your children or your children’s children or maybe your great grandchildren do not need them… :p)

Anyway, spent about 1-2 months deciding if I want to buy a whole new Synology (there were quite a few new ones on the market e.g DS1812+ or even the older DS2411+. If the latter has a new model, I might jump into it). Or deciding if I want to buy 5 x 3TB hard disks but….

In the end, my approach is this: Buy a DX510 which is an expansion unit that is meant to work with DS1511+.

But I will not extend the existing volume in DS1511+ but instead create a whole new volume in DX510. I bought two pieces of 3TB hard disks (Seagate !) and will replace 2 pieces of 2 TB in the original 1511+. Yes, I know that DOES NOT expand the volume in DS1511+. It is a waste actually but I had installed RAID5 on it and not the Synology SHR. Total waste of hard disk space but I do not want to reformat the DS1511+ and re-do all the work I done so far..

But what I will do is to remove the 2 TB in the original DS1511+ and placed them in the DX510. Later, when prices of hard disks are lower, I will continue to replace the 2TBs in DS1511 with 3TBs and move the older 2TBs to the DX510.

My eventual aim is to have a bigger DS1511+ and a smaller DX510. To that end, I want to keep the good stuff (movies, serials) in DS1511+ and move my rest of stuff (e.g. ebooks, trading videos, photos, chinese serials, other prawns) to DX510.

Long story short.. here’s photos 🙂
