Setting up Synology DX510

Lentor Mansion Preview Starts on 1st March

Changed my mind. Decided that i will use the 2 pieces of 3TB Seagate hard disks into the new DX510. That’s because I realized I got more than 2TB of data to migrate from the original DS1511+ and 2 pieces of 2TB (in a Synology Hybrid Raid) is not enough..

Also thinking ahead of time when I found out the 2 pieces of 3TB Seagate was the older firmware (CC4B) and I had to went through a big round to get it updated to the latest firmware (CC4H) (really upset with the company that sold me the hard disks). So originally these 2 pieces of hard disks were meant to go to the DS1511+ but thinking that if in the future, I get another 3 pieces of 3TB, god knows what firmware are these hard disks going to be and I might need to upgrade all the firmware of the 5 hard disks (each with different firmware versions). Too difficult for a simple mind like mine.

So ended up flashing the 2 seagate to the latest firmware and then sticking them into the DX510. First two slots.

And firing up the new DSM (upgraded DSM to the latest version in the DS1511+ too on the same day).

And setting up the 2 hard disks.. Steps in pictures attached:

Check that the DX510 is attached properly to the DS1511+ (physically they are joined by an eSata cable with locking mechanism which is great).

Check that the two hard disks are recognized in the Storage Manager:

Check that my firmware upgrade was done properly. Yes.. it is CC4H.

Okie. I create a new volume next:

There it goes creating the volume 2

The nice DSM4.0 gadget showing all is fine and volume is being created.

It actually completed the creating of the volume very quickly. Less than 10 mins ? But there is a step of doing parity checks on the 2 hard disks and RAID. Actually you can start using the volume, but I did want (or need or have the time to do so yet at that time). So i left volume 2 to do the parity checks

Started at 10:30 am in the morning and it finished at 11:45pm:

This morning, I woke up and all done and the DX510 lights are in full glory showing that it is online and RAID is completed (and the DS1511+ is in hibernation mode which is great.. I was worried that having a DX510 or the new DSM4.0 might spoil this important feature of hibernation)

Now for the hard work of slowing migrating the data from the DS1511+ volume to this new DX510 volume.

And I love Synology 🙂
