This will come useful during classes (e.g. lectures and tutorials) that I am attending for learning new stuff. Also will see how to use it as a note taker tool too. Probably also useful as a portable FM radio 🙂

The specs of the digital voice recorder:

The key specs is how much recording time you can do with the built in memory (4GB in this case) which is actually quite a lot for MP3 format. Also important is the battery life. So these are really the two KEY SPECS you should look at when buying such a recorder:

The manuals:

The Digital Voice Recorder comes with a nice bag too:

Hello recorder with a fake sticker for the screen 🙂

A slim baby:

You see at the top there is a USB slider. This is the key feature in this recorder. A built in USB so that you don’t have to carry a cable around:

A place for the micro SD card to much further expand the recording time:

Into the bag, it goes:

There is a feature called Scene Selection which basically you can set to tell the recorder what the situation of recording is (a lecture ? a meeting ? an auto voice recorder useful for self recording of notes ? an interview ? soft music recording ? loud music recording ?) and hopefully with this pre-selected scene, the Sony player will be much smarter to record it better.. apparently to hit -12dB as a target:

Will use this for my upcoming lecture !

  1. Hi there. Thanks for the review. I’m very happy with mine – I’m a journo and have used it for several interviews, including of speakers at conferences (an environment which dictaphones are notoriously bad at recording), and it’s been great.
I have one question though. Whenever I connect the device to my laptop via the USB to upload a recording (for better listening and for safety’s sake so I have a copy of my interviews), the device starts charging. Obviously it’s not great for the device to continuously be charged, especially in quick bursts. Is there a setting to deactivate that automatic charging? What’s the way around the problem?
    Looking forward to your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Linda
