Chromecast Setting Up

Lentor Mansion Preview Starts on 1st March

A while back, I bought the Chromecast, in response to Plex bringing their wonderful application to this little dongle. At that time, it was only meant for Plex Premium users which I was not. But I bought it first 🙂

This week, Plex announced the general availability of Plex on Chromecast to all users. So I happily set this up. This blog post is on the setting up. The next one will be on the “casting” including using Plex on Chromecast.

At USD35, it must be one of the cheapest media player around now, with Plex being able to be used on it… 🙂

This is how it works 🙂

Connect the Chromecast dongle to the supplied USB cable.

Go to the back of your TV and look for a HDMI port and one near to the USB port. Ha. This is an example from the back of my Samsung TV:

HDMI 4 is used and USB Port 1 is used:

And oh, you might also want to connect an audio out from your TV to your sound system. Of course, you dont have to do this and can use the TV speakers. For example, I connected a digital optical cable from the optical output to my Yamaha soundbar. My Samsung TV and Yamaha soundbar should also be able to link up without the digital optical cable and use the HDMI ARC functionality. But I could not get that to work. Need to find out why 🙂

There you have it. Switch on your TV and go to the HDMI source (for my case, HDMI 4). You will see this screen on your TV.

Next, go to your web browser or Android tablet or in my case, my iPad and download the Chromecast App and set it up:

Have to switch the Wifi from your original Wifi to the “wifi-inside Chromecast”. Only during set up 🙂

Now link your Chromecast to the wifi router you have at home…. that way, Chromecast can talk to all your devices and access the internet

Rename your Chromecast to something better than my boring one 🙂

And once you are connected, that means once Chromecast is connected to the internet.. there is (usually) a firmware upgrade.. NICE

And a reboot and installation of updates:

AND FINALLY… All done. Ready to cast 🙂

  1. Hi~
Did you ever try this connection:
Chromecast -> Yamaha SoundBar -> TV

I plug Chromecast Gen1 to YSP-1600, YSP1600 says no video/audio signal from HDMI, by the way my TV don’t support HDMI ARC.

I send mail to Yamaha Europe , but they had no experience with chromecast, so sad.

    Thanks for your watching.
