As part of the setting up a cable network at home, there is always a question of how do you know the cables are working. Sure, you can use a laptop on one end and probably another internet connection on the other hand and see if there is a link ? But what if you have many cables and they are not properly labelled etc.

So a network cable tester is good. This is usually a gadget that you can use to test both ends of a cable. Then you run some kind of diagnostics tests on one end and the “tester” will tell you if the link is good as it receives back the “signals” from the other end. Photos tell a thousand words:

And amazingly I found one that is really really cheap at Amazon. At that price point, I am not even 100% sure if it will work 🙂

  1. Hi, very useful info there. In order to check a newly converted LAN point in a BTO flat, do I connect one end to the point (e.g. in the bedroom), and the other end at the patch panel? If so, how do I check if both lights sync up when the two points are so far apart from each other? Thanks!
